about
I got the idea for the hook for this song from a conversation I had with a therapist at Nanga Music Festival back in 2021 - she came up to me, and said that she liked my song "Frozen Blue" and said that the message about openness and communication is key for a healthy relationship.
However, she mentioned that even some of her coupled clients in their 80's still had a deep fears of emotional intimacy, and anxieties around new romantic relationships, which I thought was simultaneously both heartening and hilarious.
But the biggest piece of advice she'd given me, was that "if it's mentionable, it's manageable". So this song was born of the idea of what happens when something becomes unmentionable until the end.
lyrics
When I’m sending something
You’re the first one on my phone
And I am wondering how long that takes to change
Busy keeping busy
Stay distracted when I’m home
Because the quiet really irks me
It’s worse when I’m alone
I know, I know
When did this become unmentionable
You don’t wanna talk, you don’t wanna talk to me
When did we become too much to hold
Don’t you dare call it quits
Just to say that you love me
And prompting me to take the blame
Implying we couldn’t change
I broke your heart so you did the same
Did I fail to mention anything?
So I get a haircut
Cry with friends, and sing my songs
While nearly drowning in this pain I didn’t want
You said, “oh let’s be friends”
You don’t want that
This bitterness keeps haunting me
And dragging me back from the scenery
Do you hate this like I do?
Would it be safe to come back to, oh
When did this become unmentionable
You don’t wanna talk, you don’t wanna talk to me
When did we become too much to hold
Don’t you dare call it quits
Just to say that you love me
And prompting me to take the blame
Implying we couldn’t change
I broke your heart so you did the same
Did I fail to mention anything?
Anything
Say anything
You don’t wanna talk
You don’t wanna talk to me
You don’t wanna talk
You don’t wanna talk to me
Oh why won’t talk
Oh baby come talk to me
Oh you don’t wanna talk
You don’t wanna talk to me
You don’t wanna talk
You don’t wanna talk to me
You don’t wanna talk
So baby don’t talk to me
When did this become unmentionable
You don’t wanna talk, you don’t wanna talk to me
When did we become too much to hold
Don’t you dare call it quits
Just to say that you love me
Then dressing me in all your shame
Deciding I couldn’t change
You broke my heart, to avoid the blame
Did I ever mention that oh
You broke my heart like it was all on me
Now I’ll never mention anything
